The war of words between former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has intensified, with both men trading barbs over comments made at Fayose’s 65th birthday party. Obasanjo, who attended the event as a guest of honor, had used the occasion to address Fayose’s past verbal attacks on him, saying he had forgiven him, but also reminding him of his past mistakes.
Fayose didn’t take it lightly and responded with a scathing “thank you” message, calling Obasanjo “irresponsible” and suggesting he belongs in a zoo. He also accused Obasanjo of losing his sanity and demanded the return of a monetary gift he had given him for transportation. The message was seen as a bold and cheeky response to Obasanjo’s comments.
Obasanjo fired back, saying Fayose’s message revealed his true character and returned the money, stating, “Ayo, thanks for your ‘Thank You’ message, which undisguisedly revealed who and what you are, unchanged and unchangeable.” He also questioned Fayose’s mental state, saying he was “not surprised” by his reaction.
The exchange has sparked widespread reactions, with both men known for their long history of political clashes. Fayose, a former PDP chieftain, has been a vocal critic of Obasanjo, and their feud dates back to when Fayose was governor of Ekiti State. Obasanjo, on the other hand, has been vocal about his disdain for Fayose’s alleged corruption and abuse of power.
Fayose’s supporters have rallied behind him, defending his right to respond to Obasanjo’s comments. They argue that Obasanjo’s remarks were uncalled for and that Fayose was right to defend himself. On the other hand, Obasanjo’s supporters say he was justified in his comments, given Fayose’s past behavior.
The drama is far from over, with both men expected to continue trading barbs. The exchange has dominated social media, with many Nigerians weighing in on the spat. Looks like the war of words between Obasanjo and Fayose is here to stay.
