APC

The recent wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has sparked concerns about the fate of several governors in Nigeria. Governors Agbu Kefas of Taraba State, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, and Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State are reportedly facing a defection dilemma.
Governor Kefas’ potential defection to the APC is significant, given the PDP’s 26-year dominance in Taraba State. If he decides to leave the party, it could mark a major shift in the state’s politics and potentially give the APC an upper hand in the region. Talks are reportedly at an advanced stage, with Kefas’ close allies reaching out to key APC powerbrokers in Abuja. The move is seen as a strategic play to bolster the APC’s position in the state and potentially pave the way for future electoral gains.
Similarly, Governor Mutfwang’s loyalty to the PDP has been questioned, particularly after a closed-door meeting with the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. While some analysts speculate that Mutfwang might seek alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s administration ahead of the 2027 elections, others argue that his political base and emotional ties to PDP figures like former governor Jonah Jang make a defection unlikely. Plateau APC leaders have publicly rejected any suggestion that the governor could be admitted into their fold, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.
In Adamawa State, Governor Fintiri’s recent meeting with the National Security Adviser has sparked speculation about his potential defection. Some sources suggest that Fintiri might be persuaded to join the APC, which could further weaken the PDP’s grip on the state. However, PDP loyalists have dismissed the claims as speculative and unrealistic. The PDP has maintained that its members are committed to the party’s ideals and are not exploring any defections.
The fate of these governors hangs in the balance as they weigh their options and consider their next moves. The APC’s overtures to these governors could potentially reshape the political landscape in their respective states and impact the balance of power in the country. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether these governors will remain loyal to their party or explore new opportunities.
