The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have made a significant breakthrough in their fight against drug trafficking, intercepting 30.1kg of cocaine aboard a Marshall Islands-flagged vessel, MV Aruna, at the Lagos port. This joint operation marks the third major drug interception by the NCS-NDLEA team in recent weeks.
The seizure was made possible through intelligence-led enforcement, showcasing the agencies’ commitment to curbing illicit trade. Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba, Customs Area Controller of the Apapa Port Command, praised the officers involved, emphasizing their vigilance and professionalism in safeguarding national security.
This latest bust follows previous successes, including the seizure of 25.5kg of cocaine hidden in five bags aboard another vessel and 1,187kg of “Canadian Loud” cannabis concealed in imported vehicles. These operations demonstrate the agencies’ zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking.
The NDLEA has taken possession of the seized cocaine for further investigation and potential prosecution of those involved. This collaboration reflects the strong inter-agency synergy between federal government entities and their commitment to intelligence-led enforcement.
In a related development, the NDLEA is working with international partners, including the US Drug Enforcement Administration and the UK National Crime Agency, to probe a massive 1,000kg cocaine seizure at the Tincan Island Port, valued at over $235 million ² ³.The agencies’ efforts highlight Nigeria’s growing importance in the global fight against drug trafficking.
