The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has confirmed that Ramadan 1447AH begins on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, following the sighting of the crescent moon. The announcement was made after verified reports of moon sightings were received from various parts of Nigeria and carefully authenticated by the Sultanate Council.
In his message, the Sultan urged Muslims nationwide to dedicate the holy month to fervent prayers, spiritual reflection, and acts of charity, while seeking divine guidance and peace for Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of sacrifice, self-discipline, and compassion during Ramadan .
The Sultan also called on Muslims to emulate the virtues of patience, perseverance, and generosity exemplified by Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and use the occasion to strengthen family ties, promote unity, and contribute positively to societal development.
Ramadan is a significant month in the Islamic calendar, marking a period of spiritual renewal, self-reflection, and devotion. Muslims worldwide observe the month with fasting, prayers, and charitable acts.
In Nigeria, Muslims will gather for Taraweeh prayers in mosques across the country, marking the beginning of Ramadan. The holy month is expected to bring communities together, promoting unity, peace, and spiritual growth.
The Sultan’s announcement is in line with the Islamic tradition of sighting the crescent moon to mark the beginning of Ramadan. The moon sighting is a significant event, symbolizing the start of a new month in the Islamic calendar.
As Ramadan begins, Muslims will observe a month-long fast, abstaining from food and drink from dawn to sunset. The fast is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is obligatory for all Muslims who are physically and mentally capable.
