US President Donald Trump attended a solemn ceremony at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, where he received the remains of six US soldiers killed in the ongoing war with Iran. The fallen soldiers are Major Jeffrey R. O’Brien, 45, Captain Cody A. Khork, 35, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Robert M. Marzan, 54, Sergeant 1st Class Nicole M. Amor, 39, Sergeant 1st Class Noah L. Tietjens, 42, and Sergeant Declan J. Coady, 20. They were reservists assigned to the 103rd Sustainment Command, based in Des Moines, Iowa, a unit responsible for supplying troops with food, fuel, equipment, and ammunition.
Trump, wearing a white “USA” cap, saluted as each flag-draped case was carried from a military transport plane. He was accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and other senior officials and lawmakers. The “dignified transfer” of bodies of American service members is one of the most solemn duties undertaken by a US president .
The process is a carefully choreographed military ritual, where flag-draped transfer cases carrying the remains of fallen troops are carried from an aircraft by a team of service members from the same branch. The cases are then moved to waiting vehicles that transport them to the mortuary facility at Dover, where the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System conducts identification and prepares the remains for burial.
The attack that killed the six underscored the risks facing US personnel deployed across the Middle East as the conflict with Iran escalates, with Tehran launching drones and missiles toward American and allied targets throughout the region. US officials have warned that the fighting could intensify further in the coming days.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump warned the United States would hit Iran “very hard” and threatened to expand strikes to include new targets. He described the attack as “a very sad situation” and pledged to keep American war deaths “to a minimum.
The families of the fallen soldiers were present at the ceremony, and Trump met with them privately beforehand. The soldiers’ loved ones described them as heroes, patriots, and devoted family members.
The US military has rejected Iranian claims that American soldiers had been captured, describing them as misinformation. The conflict between the US and Iran continues to escalate, with both sides exchanging strikes and counter-strikes.
