Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has received full accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to graduate medical students, just seven years after the program commenced. This achievement is a testament to the university’s commitment to providing quality medical education.
Governor Ademola Adeleke commended the MDCN for granting the accreditation, stating that it places UNIOSUN on par with top universities like the University of Lagos and Obafemi Awolowo University, with an admission quota of 150 students. The governor attributed this success to his administration’s investment in tertiary education, particularly the medical college.
The accreditation process involved a rigorous assessment of the university’s facilities, personnel, and programs. The MDCN team was impressed with the state-of-the-art facilities, including the Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital, donated by Nigerian businesswoman Folorunso Alakija.
Professor Fatimah Kyari, Registrar of the MDCN, praised Governor Adeleke for providing the necessary tools and infrastructure to meet the council’s standards. The accreditation is expected to boost the university’s reputation and attract more students seeking quality medical education.
UNIOSUN’s medical program has been recognized for its excellence, and the university is now poised to produce high-quality medical professionals. The accreditation also opens up opportunities for collaboration and exchange programs with other reputable institutions.
Governor Adeleke has promised to continue supporting the university, with plans to double the admission capacity for medicine and related courses before the next accreditation exercise. This commitment is expected to further enhance the university’s reputation and contribute to the development of healthcare in Nigeria.
The MDCN has maintained strict standards in regulating medical education since its establishment in 1963, and UNIOSUN’s accreditation is a testament to the university’s commitment to meeting these standards.
The accreditation is also expected to address the brain drain of Nigerian medical professionals, with Governor Adeleke emphasizing the need for improved working conditions to retain talent in the country.
