The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has flagged 9,469 admissions as fake across 20 tertiary institutions in Nigeria for the 2024 academic session. These admissions were conducted outside the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS), which is the official platform for managing admissions into tertiary institutions.
The institutions involved include Kano State University of Science and Technology with 2,215 fake admissions, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology with 1,215 fake admissions, Gombe State University with 1,164 fake admissions, Emmanuel Alayande University of Education with 761 fake admissions, and Federal University of Technology, Owerri with 534 fake admissions. Other institutions implicated include Achievers University, Nigeria Police Academy, Abia State Polytechnic, Osun State University, Federal University, Lafia, Niger State Polytechnic, Federal Polytechnic, Ida, Edo State Polytechnic, Anchor University, Michael and Cecilia Ibru University, Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, Ambrose Alli University, Igbinedion University, Akwa-Ibom Polytechnic, and College of Nursing, National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi.
JAMB has been warning institutions against conducting admissions outside CAPS, as it undermines the integrity of the education system. The board aims to ensure transparency, fairness, and accountability in the admission process. Any admission conducted outside CAPS is considered illegal and may lead to prosecution and severe sanctions.
Institutions and candidates involved in such practices will be held accountable. Possible penalties include withdrawal of institutional assets, prosecution of culpable officers or governing council members, and candidates admitted outside CAPS may be barred from participating in the National Youth Service Corps scheme.
