The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) Registrar, Ezekiel Adeniran, was tragically assassinated in the early hours of Thursday, July 17, 2025, at his residence in Akure, Ondo State. He was 41 years old and had been appointed as the third substantive Registrar of the university on January 6, 2025.
According to the Ondo State Police Command, Adeniran’s death was a result of assassination, with preliminary investigations indicating that two unidentified men emerged from a nearby bush and forced a substance into his mouth. The exact nature of the substance is yet to be confirmed, and a post-mortem examination will determine whether it was poisonous.
The university management expressed shock and sorrow over the registrar’s sudden death, describing him as a dedicated and hardworking staff member. The management stated, “The devastating news has thrown the university into mourning. He was still at his duty post on Monday, July 14, 2025. As of the time of writing this statement, the cause of death is yet to be ascertained.”
The police have launched a full investigation into the incident and are working to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has taken over the case, and the police have appealed to anyone with relevant information to come forward, assuring confidentiality for informants.
Adeniran’s remains have been deposited at a morgue in a nearby hospital, pending the conclusion of investigations. The university community is deeply grieved by the loss, and tributes are being paid to the late administrator, who was described as humble and efficient .
