The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a whopping N987 billion for extensive infrastructure upgrades at airports across Nigeria. This landmark decision was made under the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund, with a focus on enhancing aviation infrastructure nationwide.
The Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal One Rehabilitation is a major project under this initiative. The terminal will be completely overhauled, involving stripping it down to its core structure and rebuilding all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. This project is part of the N712.26 billion allocated for Lagos airport upgrades.
Additionally, Terminal Two at the airport will be expanded, which includes constructing a new apron, access roads, bridges, and related infrastructure to boost airport capacity. This expansion will significantly enhance the airport’s ability to handle increased passenger traffic and improve overall efficiency.
Several airports will benefit from runway and taxiway upgrades. Malam Aminu Kano International Airport will undergo runway and taxiway rehabilitation, with airfield ground lighting upgrade to Category 2 (CAT 2) standards, costing N46.39 billion. Similarly, Port Harcourt International Airport will receive runway and taxiway rehabilitation, with upgraded airfield lighting to CAT 2 standards, costing N42.14 billion.
Security enhancements are also a key part of the upgrade plan. A 14.6 km perimeter fence equipped with CCTV cameras, solar-powered floodlights, intrusion detection systems, and patrol roads will be constructed at MMIA, valued at nearly N50 billion. This will significantly improve the security infrastructure of the airport.
Furthermore, the FEC has approved the full business case for a 30-year concession of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu. This move aims to attract private investments and modernize airport facilities, potentially leading to improved services and increased efficiency.
The approval of these projects underscores the government’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure. The upgrades are expected to enhance the overall passenger experience, increase airport capacity, and improve safety and security standards. With these developments, Nigeria’s airports are poised to become more efficient and attractive to both domestic and international travelers.
