US President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines to regions near Russia in response to “highly provocative” comments made by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The move signals escalating tensions between the US and Russia.
The spat between Trump and Medvedev began earlier this week when Trump criticized Medvedev and imposed trade penalties on India for its ties with Russia. Medvedev responded with a provocative statement referencing Russia’s Cold War nuclear strategy, specifically the “Dead Hand” system, a secret automatic or semi-automatic nuclear weapons control system developed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War .
Trump warned Medvedev to “watch his words,” stating that “words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences.” He emphasized that the deployment of nuclear submarines was a precautionary measure, hoping that the situation would not escalate further .
Medvedev retaliated by accusing Trump of playing an “ultimatum game” with Russia, reminding him that Russia is a formidable force and shouldn’t be underestimated. Medvedev also stated that Russia would continue on its own path, unaffected by Trump’s warnings .
The deployment of nuclear submarines comes amid heightened tensions between the US and Russia, particularly over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Trump has been pushing for a ceasefire in Ukraine and has threatened new economic sanctions if progress is not made. The situation remains volatile, with both sides engaging in a war of words.
