Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has unveiled a proposed revamp of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, with a whopping N712 billion price tag. The project aims to transform the airport into a modern, world-class facility, addressing rising passenger demand and infrastructure deficiencies. According to Keyamo, the project will entail a complete overhaul of Terminal One, including a complete strip-down and rebuild, redesigning, and reconfiguring the space to meet modern international standards.
The project will affect both Wings D and E of the terminal, and the goal is to create a seamless and efficient passenger experience. Additionally, Terminal Two will be expanded, with the building and apron being enlarged to accommodate more aircraft, particularly wide-body planes. To ease congestion and provide direct access to the departure lounge, two new ring roads and a bridge will be constructed.
The revamp also includes modern infrastructure upgrades, incorporating smart solutions to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency. Furthermore, a 14.6-kilometer security metal fence with intrusion detection, CCTV, and floodlights will be constructed to ensure the security of the airport.
The project will be funded through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund, sourced from savings accrued after the removal of fuel subsidies. Keyamo assured Nigerians that no loans would be involved, and the project would be transparent, with regular site tours for the press, civil society groups, lawmakers, and interested citizens to monitor progress and quality.
The minister emphasized that the project is a long-overdue national investment, aimed at delivering a world-class facility that can compete with leading global hubs. With a projected completion timeline of 22 months for some aspects and 24 months for others, the revamp is expected to make MMIA a benchmark for Nigeria’s aviation industry. Upon completion, the airport will boast modern facilities, improved infrastructure, and enhanced security, providing a better experience for passengers and setting a new standard for airports in the region.
