The Lagos State Government has issued a public advisory urging residents to remain calm following a prolonged period of heavy rainfall that has lasted over 12 hours. Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, assured the public that the state has resilient infrastructure in place to manage flash floods, but emphasized that collective action is necessary to mitigate the impact.
The government has taken steps to ensure the state’s drainage systems are functioning properly, with year-round cleaning and maintenance of drainage channels. Contracts have also been awarded for the concrete lining of new channels to enhance stormwater management. Emergency response teams have been placed on alert to monitor affected areas and respond swiftly where needed.
Residents are advised to take precautions to ensure their safety during this period. Parents and guardians are urged to keep children indoors to prevent accidents, as swimming or playing in floodwater can be extremely dangerous. Motorists and pedestrians are cautioned against attempting to drive or walk through floodwaters, as vehicles can be submerged and people swept away by strong currents.
Proper waste disposal is also crucial in preventing flooding. Residents are warned against disposing of refuse into drains, as this can clog drainage systems and worsen flooding. Offenders will face legal consequences. The government is committed to ensuring that the state’s drainage systems are kept clear of debris and waste.
According to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), thunderstorms and rain are predicted for the next three days, with rising water levels in the lagoon potentially leading to tidal locks that prevent stormwater discharge. The government is working closely with relevant agencies to monitor the situation and respond to any emerging challenges.
