Kwam 1, the Fuji music legend, has broken his silence on the controversy surrounding his attempt to board a ValueJet flight from Abuja to Lagos with a flask. In a statement issued by his media aide, Kunle Rasheed, Kwam 1 denied allegations of misconduct, insisting he was the victim of an escalated incident. He claimed the flask contained plain drinking water, not alcohol, as alleged by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
According to Kwam 1, the situation was unnecessarily escalated despite his efforts to clarify that the flask contained water. He emphasized that as a frequent international traveler, he understands and strictly complies with aviation rules. The musician also pointed out that the pilot involved in the incident has since had her license suspended, suggesting she may be attempting to deflect blame.
Kwam 1 maintains that the flask contained plain drinking water, handed to him at the lounge, not alcohol or contraband. FAAN, however, alleges that Kwam 1 attempted to board the flight with alcohol, spilling it on an aviation officer when asked to step aside for clarification. The incident led to Kwam 1 being escorted off the plane by security, and the flight captain faced resistance when trying to intervene.
FAAN and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) have launched investigations into the incident. Kwam 1 has since issued a public apology, acknowledging personal misconduct and pleading for forgiveness from the authorities and the public. He expressed regret over the incident, describing it as “a moment of thoughtless indiscretion” that provoked widespread public criticism.
Kwam 1 also revealed that ValueJet’s Chairman and Managing Director personally apologized to him and offered to fly him to Lagos on a private jet, which he declined. This gesture contradicts FAAN’s account of the incident, adding fuel to the controversy [1][7].
