The Federal Government has announced plans to engage Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol. This decision follows a recent controversy surrounding KWAM 1’s conduct at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, where he attempted to block a moving aircraft.
The incident occurred on August 5, 2025, when KWAM 1 was involved in a confrontation with airline staff and security officials while trying to board a ValueJet flight to Lagos. The incident was captured on video, showing the musician standing in front of a taxiing plane. He allegedly assaulted an airport official, leading to widespread condemnation and calls for his arrest and prosecution.
In response to the incident, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority imposed an indefinite flight ban on KWAM 1 and filed a criminal complaint against him. However, after KWAM 1 publicly apologized and demonstrated remorse, the government reviewed its decision. According to Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, KWAM 1’s flight ban will be reduced to one month, and the criminal complaint will be withdrawn.
As an ambassador for airport security protocol, KWAM 1 will work with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria to promote proper airport security procedures and raise public awareness. The goal is to leverage KWAM 1’s influence to educate travelers on the importance of respecting security and operational guidelines at airports.
The government has also taken other measures, including retraining personnel on handling disruptive passengers and de-escalating potentially explosive situations. Aviation agencies will hold a retreat to address staff conduct towards travelers and review cases of unruly behavior on flights. Both KWAM 1’s case and another passenger’s case have been resolved with a focus on rehabilitation and public service.
