The Federal Executive Council has approved ₦142 billion for the construction of six modern bus terminals across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The terminals will be located in Abeokuta, Ogun State (South-West); Gombe, Gombe State (North-East); Kano, Kano State (North-West); Lokoja, Kogi State (North-Central); Onitsha, Anambra State (South-East); and Ewu, Edo State (South-South).
These modern bus terminals will feature passenger lounges, ticketing halls, commercial spaces, restrooms, dedicated loading bays, and technology-driven security and monitoring systems. They are designed to integrate with other modes of transportation, providing improved linkages between cities and boosting interstate commerce.
The project aims to improve road safety, enhance passenger comfort, and stimulate economic activities. The government believes that the absence of purpose-built bus terminals contributes to increased crime, road traffic accidents, and the proliferation of arms along highways.
The contract for the project has been awarded to Messrs Planet Project Limited, a company with experience in notable projects like the Oshodi Transport Interchange and Ikeja Bus Terminal. Construction is expected to commence later this year, with the terminals to be operated under public-private partnership arrangements to ensure efficiency, sustainability, and world-class service delivery.
