The Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Sami Goma II, a renowned traditional ruler in Kebbi State, Nigeria, has passed away at the age of 81 in a London hospital. He died on Saturday, August 16, 2025, after a brief illness, leaving behind four wives and seven children. The news of his demise was confirmed by the Kebbi State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Abubakar Dustin Mari, in a statement on Saturday.
The late Emir was a courageous traditional ruler who earned a reputation for firmness, simplicity, and dedication to cultural values. Born on October 24, 1943, Sani Sami joined the Nigerian Army on December 10, 1962, and trained at the Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, United Kingdom. He was commissioned on July 25, 1963, alongside notable coursemates like former military president General Ibrahim Babangida.
During his military career, Sani Sami held several key positions, including serving as Military Governor of Bauchi State from 1984 to 1985 under General Muhammadu Buhari’s regime. He later became the Emir of Zuru in 1995, a position he held until his demise.
The Kebbi State Government has extended condolences to the late Emir’s family, the Zuru Emirate Council, and the people of Kebbi State, praying for the Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus. Burial arrangements will be announced soon as the Kebbi Government mourns.
