NCC educates NYSC Corps Members on data usage

The National Communications Commission (NCC) has intensified its efforts to educate Nigerian youths on the responsible use of data and the growing concerns around rapid data depletion. As part of this initiative, the commission has extended its sensitization campaign to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camps across the country.
Recognizing that young people are among the heaviest users of mobile data, the NCC aims to empower corps members with the knowledge to manage their data consumption efficiently. Many users often complain about data exhaustion without understanding the factors contributing to it, such as background app activities, automatic updates, and excessive streaming. The NCC’s campaign seeks to address these issues by providing practical tips on optimizing data usage.
Through interactive sessions, demonstrations, and informational materials, the commission educates corps members on best practices for conserving data, including disabling unnecessary background processes, using data-saving modes on apps, and monitoring data usage through network provider tools. The initiative also highlights the importance of cybersecurity, advising against unsecured public Wi-Fi networks and fraudulent data subscription schemes.
By targeting NYSC orientation camps, the NCC ensures that its message reaches a broad and influential demographic. Corps members, who serve as leaders and role models in their communities, can further disseminate this knowledge, amplifying the campaign’s impact. The move aligns with the NCC’s broader mandate to protect telecom consumers and promote digital literacy in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
This sensitization effort reflects the commission’s commitment to bridging the information gap and fostering a more informed and efficient data usage culture among Nigerian youths.
In a gesture of goodwill and support, the Commission further extended its commitment to the welfare of NYSC members by donating essential food supplies to the orientation camps. Each camp received substantial provisions, including three 50-kilogram bags of rice and three 25-litre containers of vegetable oil, aimed at supplementing meals for the corps members during their stay. The handover ceremony was conducted in a formal setting, with Salamatu Mohammed, the NYSC State Coordinator for Nasarawa, and Martina Shuaibu-Ibrahim, her counterpart in Niger State, officially receiving the items on behalf of their respective camps. This donation not only underscores the Commission’s dedication to fostering a conducive environment for youth development but also reflects its broader efforts to collaborate with institutions in promoting the well-being of young Nigerians. The provision of these food items is expected to alleviate some of the logistical challenges faced by the camps while ensuring that corps members remain adequately nourished throughout their orientation program.
