Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has expressed strong concerns over the Federal Government’s decision to approve ₦142 billion for constructing modern bus terminals across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. He argues that this spending is a “tragic irony” given the country’s struggling healthcare system, which receives significantly less funding. According to Obi, the combined budget for all federal teaching hospitals and psychiatric centers in Nigeria is less than ₦100 billion for the 2024 budget year, a stark contrast to the ₦142 billion allocated for bus terminals.
This disparity in funding is particularly concerning, Obi notes, given the significant healthcare challenges facing the nation. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that over 20 million Nigerians are living with mental health issues, further emphasizing the need for increased healthcare funding. Obi believes that investing in healthcare and other critical sectors should take precedence over projects like bus terminals, which, although potentially beneficial, are not as pressing.
The issue has sparked calls for a comprehensive reassessment of the 2024 budget, with critics arguing that essential services like healthcare and education should be prioritized over infrastructure projects like bus terminals.
