Port Harcourt has been officially recognized as Nigeria’s Premier Energy City by the Society of Energy Editors. This designation acknowledges the city’s historical significance and future potential as a leading energy hub in Africa. The ceremony marked a bold commitment to positioning Port Harcourt as a continental energy leader.
A Memorandum of Agreement will be signed between the Rivers State Government and the Society of Energy Editors to open doors for international investment, elevate the city’s global prestige, and establish an annual international conference to showcase Port Harcourt alongside other globally recognized energy cities.
The Rivers State Government has outlined a strategic plan to consolidate this new designation. The plan focuses on energy diversification, local value addition, infrastructure development, environmental stewardship, and global re-integration. The government aims to expand into renewables like solar, wind, and hydro, alongside petroleum and gas, to secure a balanced and sustainable energy future. They also plan to deepen local content, build a regional energy hub with world-class infrastructure, and safeguard rivers, farmlands, and communities to ensure sustainable development.
The government has pledged robust security, fiscal discipline, and investor-friendly policies to make ventures in gas, crude refining, and petrochemicals viable and profitable. The private sector is invited to invest with courage and responsibility, while the youth are encouraged to bring their creativity and innovation into the energy space.
This recognition coincides with preparations for Nigeria’s 70th Oil & Gas Anniversary, highlighting Port Harcourt’s journey from oil discovery to a modern energy metropolis. Reintegration into the World Energy Cities Partnership is expected to unlock transformative economic opportunities, attract foreign investment, and position Port Harcourt as Africa’s energy innovation gateway.
