Gunmen kidnapped a health worker, Pastor Ayodeji Akesinro, a staff member of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owo, Ondo State, on Thursday, August 28, 2025, around 7:00 p.m. at his residence in Upenme community. The National Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) confirmed the incident and expressed shock over the abduction. The union is deeply concerned about the safety of health workers in the state and has demanded Akesinro’s immediate and safe release.
The union is calling on the Ondo State Government and security agencies to take immediate action to secure Akesinro’s release and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. They want increased security measures in Owo and its environs to prevent future kidnappings, particularly of health workers. The union also demands collaboration with security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice.
The Ondo State Police Command, led by Commissioner Adebowale Lawal, has assured the public that security operatives, working alongside local hunters, are making concerted efforts to rescue Akesinro and bring the perpetrators to justice. The police have commenced investigations and are combing the bush to rescue the victim. The command is working tirelessly to ensure Akesinro’s safe release and to prevent further incidents of kidnapping in the state.
The union has hinted at a possible declaration of a day of protest in Owo to demand Akesinro’s safe release if the situation is not addressed. The health workers are concerned about the rising insecurity in the state and the impact it has on their safety and ability to perform their duties. They are demanding that the government take concrete steps to ensure their safety and security.
