A tragic accident occurred on Monday at Ibeju Bus Stop along the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos State, resulting in six fatalities and nine injuries. The victims included two adult males, three adult females, and a child. Nine others, comprising three males and six females, sustained varying degrees of injuries, while four occupants escaped unhurt from the mangled wreckage.
The crash involved a blue Volvo FL6 truck loaded with wooden planks and a white commercial bus with registration number AKD 336 YD. According to preliminary investigations, excessive speeding and reckless driving caused the accident. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) attributed the crash to human recklessness and poor judgment.
LASTMA officials, along with other emergency responders, swiftly rescued the survivors and evacuated the scene. The injured were taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Epe and Hammond Hospital for treatment. The remains of the deceased were deposited at the FMC morgue, pending formal identification by their families.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and lamented the continued disregard for traffic regulations by motorists. He reiterated LASTMA’s age-long caution that “speed thrills, but ultimately kills”. Bakare-Oki warned drivers against speeding, urging them to cultivate patience, discipline, and defensive driving habits, particularly during the Ember Months when vehicular movement typically increases.
The FRSC also cautioned motorists against reckless driving, attributing most accidents to human error. Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat extended condolences to the families of the deceased and appealed to motorists to adopt safe driving practices. He stressed that overspeeding remains one of the leading causes of deadly road crashes and urged drivers to prioritize caution and compliance with traffic regulations.
