The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has expressed confidence that more state governors will defect to the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general election to strengthen President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid. Yilwatda made this statement during the 12th Expanded Stakeholders’ Meeting of the APC in Bayelsa State, where the party formally endorsed Tinubu as its sole presidential candidate for 2027.
According to Yilwatda, the recent defections of Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC demonstrate the president’s growing influence. He emphasized that Tinubu’s performance in governance has attracted governors, senators, and other key political figures from opposition parties to the APC.
Yilwatda likened President Tinubu to a lion unfazed by opposition criticism, stating that the president is focused on his mission to take Nigeria to greater heights. He urged party members in Bayelsa to remain united to ensure an overwhelming victory in 2027. The APC chairman also praised the South-South region for showing “political maturity” by aligning with the APC, noting that governors from the zone have abandoned their old parties to support the president’s vision ¹ ².
The APC’s confidence in Tinubu’s leadership and vision is evident in their endorsement of him as their sole candidate for the 2027 presidential polls. The party leaders praised Tinubu’s bold reforms in the economy, infrastructure, energy, and security sectors, stressing that these reforms have laid a solid foundation for a prosperous Nigeria and rekindled the hope of citizens.
Yilwatda reiterated that the APC’s doors are open to accommodate more governors, lawmakers, and other leaders willing to join hands with the party to move Nigeria forward. He expressed optimism that more governors and lawmakers will defect to the APC ahead of the 2027 general election, citing Tinubu’s calibre, integrity, and achievements as the driving force behind these defections.
