The Federation of African Journalists has strongly condemned the killing and abuse of journalists and media workers in Gaza by Israeli forces, describing these actions as “grave breaches of international humanitarian and human rights law”. At least 221 Palestinian journalists and media workers have been killed, and many more have been detained, denied medical care, or forced to work without protective equipment.
The organization decried the relentless killing and abuses, noting that journalists have been targeted both while on duty and at home with their families. Media offices, radio stations, and press vehicles have been struck, disrupting the ability to report and inform.
The FAJ demands that Israeli forces protect journalists and other civilians, refrain from targeting the media, and take active steps to prevent further harm. They also urged states to adopt a new international convention on the protection of journalists to deliver binding guarantees for their safety and independence.
The organization calls for full, independent, and public investigations into attacks on journalists, leading to prosecutions of those responsible. They also demand safe reporting conditions, including protective equipment, evacuation arrangements, and stable communications, and the release of detained journalists.
The FAJ reaffirmed its solidarity with the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate and pledged to continue amplifying the voices of Palestinian journalists. They urged governments, continental organizations, regional bodies, and UN agencies to act now to protect Palestinian journalists, safeguard media infrastructure, and uphold the public’s right to know.
