The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly condemned Rauf Aregbesola’s claims that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will take over Aso Rock and the Lagos State government in the 2027 elections. Aregbesola, the National Secretary of ADC, made this declaration at an event where the leader of the Labour Party’s Conscience Forum, Moshood Salvador, defected to ADC with his supporters.
The APC described Aregbesola’s remarks as “an empty boast” and accused him of turning against the party that built his career. According to the APC’s spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, Aregbesola’s comments are more of a “public obituary of his own political relevance” than a threat to the APC. Oladejo emphasized that Lagosians and Nigerians vote based on performance, not empty promises or “fairy tales”, pointing to APC’s track record in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and policy reforms as evidence of its governance.
The APC criticized ADC’s decision to place Aregbesola at the forefront of its campaign, describing it as a “recipe for failure”. The party highlighted APC’s stability and endurance, stating that no individual’s self-destruction could destabilize the party. Aregbesola’s involvement with ADC would ultimately prove detrimental to the opposition party’s chances, as his criticisms of APC only damage his own legacy.
Aregbesola’s grassroots mobilization strategy for 2027 involves a “ten over ten” approach, where one person gets ten others, and each of those ten gets ten more. However, the APC remains confident in securing victory in the 2027 elections, predicting that Nigerians will choose consistency, credibility, and competence over confusion, contradiction, and comedy.
The APC’s reaction highlights the ongoing rivalry between the APC and ADC, with the former seeking to maintain its stronghold on power and the latter attempting to gain traction in the political landscape.
