Utah prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Tyler Robinson, 22, accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Robinson allegedly fired a single rifle shot from a rooftop that pierced Kirk’s neck during an event at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. The prosecutors claim Robinson targeted Kirk based on his political views and knew children would witness the killing, which are aggravating factors that make the crime eligible for the death penalty.
Robinson faces seven criminal counts, including aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering. The prosecution’s case includes DNA evidence linking Robinson to the murder weapon and text messages where he allegedly confessed to the crime. In one message, Robinson told his roommate, “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.” He also planned the attack for over a week and expressed concern about leaving behind the rifle, which belonged to his grandfather.
The roommate, who is cooperating with authorities, found a note from Robinson that read, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.” Robinson turned himself in after his parents saw images of the gunman and confronted him, and a family friend, a retired deputy sheriff, persuaded him to surrender.
US President Donald Trump has also called for the death penalty in this case. Robinson’s next court hearing is scheduled for September 29.
