FirstBank is set to revolutionize banking services for visually impaired and physically challenged customers with a range of innovative solutions. The bank’s initiative aims to provide equal access to financial services, aligning with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s financial inclusion strategy and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The bank will introduce tailored services, including transaction documents in braille, audio, large print, and digital formats. Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) will be upgraded with voice-prompt commands and high-contrast screens to facilitate easy navigation. Debit cards will feature tactile motifs and braille inscriptions for easy recognition, while security features like soft PINs and tokens will be enhanced for secure access. Product brochures will also be made available in braille and audio formats to support customer understanding and engagement.
This initiative will enable visually impaired and physically challenged customers to manage their accounts independently and securely, without relying on third-party assistance. FirstBank’s commitment to diversity is reflected in its workforce composition, with 41% female staff and 37% women in management roles. The bank’s membership in UN Women further affirms its alignment with the Women’s Empowerment Principles, promoting equal opportunity and inclusion.
The initiative will be implemented in phases across all FirstBank subsidiaries and locations, setting a new benchmark for inclusive banking in Nigeria and West Africa. By embedding accessibility features into its operations, FirstBank is shaping a future where every individual, regardless of physical ability, can access financial services independently and securely. This move aligns with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s target of 95% financial inclusion by 2025 and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which advocates for equal access to financial systems globally.
FirstBank’s inclusive banking services will not only enhance customer experience but also set a precedent for other financial institutions in the region. By prioritizing inclusive banking, FirstBank is reinforcing its customer-first strategy and cementing its role as a leader in ethical, accessible, and impactful banking in Africa.
