Dangote Refinery Suspends Petrol Sales in Naira Amid Price Hike Fears

The Dangote Refinery has suspended petrol sales in naira due to the depletion of its crude-for-naira allocation. This decision will take effect from Sunday, September, 2025. Customers with ongoing naira-based transactions have been advised to request refunds formally.
The refinery has been selling petroleum products in excess of its naira-crude allocations, and inadequate crude-for-naira allocations have made it unsustainable for the refinery to continue PMS sales in naira.
This suspension may disrupt fuel supply and pricing stability, adding pressure on Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves. Petrol prices could surge above ₦900 per litre if transactions are shifted predominantly to dollars.
The refinery is also embroiled in a dispute with labour unions over the alleged mass sacking of over Nigerian workers. Union leaders have vowed to resist what they describe as “an unjust and insensitive corporate decision,” threatening nationwide solidarity actions.
The refinery will provide further updates on the resumption of supply once the situation has been resolved. Customers with pending naira-based transactions are advised to seek refunds or await further instructions.
