The Inspector-General of Police has charged newly commissioned lawyer-officers of the Nigeria Police Force to remain committed to the ideals of justice and professionalism while also standing firm in defending the image and integrity of the Force. Speaking during their induction, he reminded the officers that their call to serve goes beyond legal practice in the conventional sense, as they now carry the dual responsibility of being both law enforcement agents and legal practitioners within the system. He stressed that their role is crucial in strengthening the justice delivery process, especially in the area of police prosecutions, legal advisory services, and ensuring that human rights are respected in the course of policing duties.
The Inspector-General pointed out that in recent times, the police have been the subject of criticism and public scrutiny, sometimes fairly and other times unfairly, but emphasized that it is the duty of these lawyer-officers to use their knowledge of the law to correct misconceptions and also defend the institution against unfounded allegations. He noted that the Force needs officers who can represent it credibly in courtrooms, in policy discussions, and in other legal matters, adding that the new officers must embody the principles of fairness, courage, and discipline in all their engagements.
He further advised them to view their legal training not just as a personal achievement but as a tool for service to the nation, explaining that their presence in the Force should help in improving the quality of police investigations, reducing errors in prosecution, and ensuring that the rights of citizens are adequately protected. According to him, professionalism and integrity are non-negotiable, and any misuse of their legal expertise for selfish or unethical purposes would not be tolerated.
The Inspector-General also encouraged the lawyer-officers to constantly seek further training and specialization, stressing that continuous learning is vital in keeping up with evolving legal standards and global best practices. He noted that the Nigeria Police Force must continue to reform and adapt, and that having dedicated legal minds within its ranks would significantly enhance its credibility and efficiency. He concluded by charging them to be loyal to the Force, committed to the rule of law, and determined to leave behind a legacy of excellence that will reflect positively on the police and on the nation as a whole.
