The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued a flood alert warning of heavy rainfall in 16 states across Nigeria between October 4 and October 8, 2025. According to the National Flood Early Warning Centre, 39 locations are likely to be affected. The states expected to experience flooding include Delta, Yobe, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Oyo, Kebbi, Kano, Niger, Kwara, Benue, Borno, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, and Enugu.
The ministry is urging relevant stakeholders and state governments to take precautionary measures to mitigate the potential impacts of the predicted flooding. Residents in identified high-risk areas are advised to brace up for possible flash floods, stay informed through official channels, avoid crossing flooded roads, and report early signs of water level rise to local emergency desks.
The affected states will experience varying levels of flooding, with specific locations in each state likely to be impacted. In Delta State, Asaba is expected to be affected, while in Yobe State, Damaturu is likely to experience flooding. Sokoto State’s Isa and Shagari are also on alert. Zamfara State’s Anka, Bungudu, Gusau, Kaura-Namoda, Maradun, and Shinkafi are expected to be affected, while Katsina State’s Jibia is also at risk.
Other states, including Oyo, Kebbi, Kano, Niger, Kwara, Benue, Borno, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, and Enugu, are also expected to experience flooding in various locations. This warning comes on the heels of recent floods that have affected several parts of the country, resulting in significant loss of life and property. As of September 20, at least 232 people had lost their lives, and over 121,000 individuals had been displaced, with 339,658 Nigerians affected and 681 sustaining injuries.
