President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, following allegations of certificate forgery and intense political blackmail. Nnaji, who was appointed to the position in August 2023, tendered his resignation on October 7, 2025, citing persistent attacks from political opponents as the reason for his decision.
In his resignation letter, Nnaji expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve Nigeria, describing his tenure as a valuable experience. He emphasized that his resignation was aimed at protecting the integrity of the administration. Tinubu accepted Nnaji’s resignation, thanking him for his service and wishing him success in his future endeavors.
The controversy surrounding Nnaji’s appointment began with allegations of certificate forgery, which led to a court case. The Federal High Court in Enugu had rejected Nnaji’s bid to stop the University of Nigeria from releasing his academic records, fueling further public scrutiny. Despite maintaining that he was being blackmailed by political opponents, Nnaji chose to step aside.
The Presidency has yet to announce a replacement for the position. Nnaji’s resignation comes amid ongoing investigations into the allegations against him, although no formal charges have been announced. The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the resignation and thanked Nnaji for his contributions to the administration .
Nnaji’s departure marks a significant development in the administration, highlighting the challenges faced by public officials in Nigeria. The focus now shifts to the appointment of a new minister and the implications for the country’s innovation and scientific development sector.
