The National Council of State has unanimously approved Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). President Bola Tinubu presented Amupitan’s nomination to fill the vacant position left by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who served from 2015 to October 2025.
Professor Amupitan is a seasoned academic and legal practitioner with a distinguished record in academia and legal practice. He is a Professor of Law at the University of Jos, where he currently serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration). Additionally, he holds the position of Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Joseph Ayo Babalola University in Osun State.
Amupitan’s qualifications are impressive, with a strong background in law. He specializes in Company Law, Law of Evidence, Corporate Governance, and Privatization Law. He became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in September 2014 and has authored several books on law, including “Corporate Governance: Models and Principles” (2008), “Documentary Evidence in Nigeria” (2008), “Evidence Law: Theory and Practice in Nigeria” (2013), “Principles of Company Law” (2013), and “An Introduction to the Law of Trust in Nigeria” (2014).
The nomination has received widespread support, with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State describing Amupitan as “a man of integrity and sound judgment”. President Tinubu emphasized that Amupitan is non-partisan and possesses a distinguished record in academia and legal practice, making him an ideal candidate for the position.
Now that the Council of State has approved the nomination, President Tinubu will forward Amupitan’s name to the Senate for screening and confirmation. If confirmed, Amupitan will take over as the new INEC Chairman, bringing his expertise and experience to the role.
