Farouk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives, has expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for granting him a presidential pardon. Lawan’s statement described Tinubu as “fatherly, compassionate, and decisive,” saying the pardon has renewed his hope and restored his faith in active citizenship.
The pardon comes after Lawan’s conviction in 2021 for demanding a $3 million bribe from businessman Femi Otedola. Lawan was sentenced to seven years in prison, later reduced to five years by the Court of Appeal and upheld by the Supreme Court. He was released in October 2024 after serving his term.
Lawan’s pardon is part of a larger list of 175 individuals granted clemency by President Tinubu, including notable figures like Herbert Macaulay and former FCT minister Mamman Vatsa. Lawan has pledged to re-dedicate himself to Nigeria’s ideals, saying his faith in the country’s greatness never wavered despite his ordeal.
In his statement, Lawan thanked Tinubu for “casting a warm blanket” over him and expressed gratitude for the mercy shown to him. He also acknowledged the support of his family, friends, and associates, stating they stood by him through thick and thin .
