President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed over 64,000 members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and other political parties in Jigawa State into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The mass defection, one of the largest political realignments in recent years, underscores growing grassroots support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda. Represented by Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, President Tinubu assured the new members of equal treatment and opportunities within the party.
The defection marks a significant boost to the APC’s dominance in Jigawa State, with Governor Umar Namadi Danmodi declaring that the party “cannot be challenged” in the state. The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security and completing key infrastructure projects, including the Kano-Maiduguri federal highway, to enhance trade and economic growth.
The APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, praised Governor Danmodi’s developmental strides and urged the defectors to feel at home and work for the party. Kabiru Ibrahim Masari, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political Affairs, encouraged Jigawa residents to continue supporting President Tinubu’s reforms aimed at improving lives and expanding opportunities.
The defection is seen as a major setback for the PDP, with the APC claiming that Nigerians are making their stance known through the growing number of defections from the opposition party to the ruling party. The PDP, however, remains confident that it will regain power in 2027, attributing the defections to the people’s confidence in President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
