Ben Murray-Bruce, the former Bayelsa East Senator, has announced his defection from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing his confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s leadership and economic reforms. In a statement, Murray-Bruce praised Tinubu’s understanding of finance, describing him as a leader driven by results, not applause. He highlighted the President’s efforts to stabilize the economy, strengthen the naira, and restore investor confidence through professional leadership at the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The former senator commended Tinubu’s national security reforms, noting that the appointment of the National Security Adviser has significantly improved Nigeria’s safety architecture, with insecurity being “quietly and systematically dismantled”. Murray-Bruce also lauded the administration’s infrastructural drive, describing it as unprecedented, with massive road networks, modernized ports, airports, and housing schemes springing up across the nation. These developments, he said, are the arteries through which growth and opportunity now flow.
Murray-Bruce expressed confidence in Tinubu’s ongoing economic reforms, describing them as the foundation for the country’s future prosperity. He believes Nigeria will witness phenomenal growth in the next eight years under Tinubu’s leadership. The defection is seen as a significant boost to Tinubu’s administration, especially with the 2027 elections approaching. Murray-Bruce’s decision is also a blow to the PDP, which has been experiencing a series of defections to the APC.
In his statement, Murray-Bruce said, “I know it is still a difficult season for many families. But as history teaches, reform is never painless. Yet, it is in these moments of sacrifice that nations are reborn.” He emphasized that Tinubu’s leadership, guided by courage and intellect, will deliver the Nigeria they have all dreamed of. “Mark my words: in the full term of eight years, Nigeria will witness phenomenal growth. I choose to stand with that vision. I choose to stand with reform. I choose to stand with the future.
Murray-Bruce’s defection comes on the heels of Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri’s announcement of his move to the APC, along with 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly. The governor and lawmakers had not disclosed their new party at the time of Murray-Bruce’s announcement
