The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olanipekun Olukoyede, has been re-elected as the President of the Network of National Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa (NACIWA), a regional body that brings together anti-corruption agencies from ECOWAS member states. The re-election, which took place during the organization’s general assembly, drew delegates from across West Africa, including heads of anti-graft bodies, government officials, and development partners who are committed to strengthening the region’s anti-corruption framework.Olukoyede’s re-election is widely regarded as a vote of confidence in his leadership, vision, and commitment to advancing integrity, transparency, and accountability across the sub-region.
During his first tenure, Olukoyede worked to deepen cooperation among NACIWA member institutions, promote cross-border intelligence sharing, and enhance the capacity of anti-corruption operatives through training and institutional reforms. His efforts also focused on harmonizing regional anti-corruption laws and policies to ensure more effective coordination among member states in the investigation and prosecution of financial crimes, bribery, and other forms of corruption that hinder socio-economic development in West Africa.
With his renewed mandate, Olukoyede is expected to build on these achievements by introducing innovative strategies that will strengthen institutional resilience against corruption. He emphasized the importance of collaboration in tackling transnational crimes such as money laundering, illicit financial flows, terrorism financing, and cyber-enabled fraud, which continue to pose serious threats to the stability and development of the region. His leadership will also prioritize capacity building, policy harmonization, and advocacy for stronger political will among regional leaders to sustain the fight against corruption.
The re-election further underscores Nigeria’s leading role in promoting good governance and anti-corruption efforts within the ECOWAS sub-region. It also reinforces the EFCC’s standing as one of Africa’s most recognized and proactive anti-corruption agencies. International observers and regional partners have commended Olukoyede for his pragmatic approach to anti-corruption work, particularly his emphasis on preventive measures, youth engagement, and inter-agency collaboration.
As he begins another term as NACIWA President, expectations are high that his leadership will continue to drive progress in building a united front against corruption in West Africa. His tenure is anticipated to bring about greater synergy among member states, foster stronger partnerships with global anti-corruption organizations, and promote reforms that will strengthen the rule of law and transparency across the region.
