The Lagos State Government is launching the Omi Eko Project, a €410 million initiative aimed at transforming water transportation in Lagos. This groundbreaking project will introduce over 78 high-capacity electric ferries, digital ticketing systems, intelligent terminals, and modern safety innovations. The launch is scheduled for Friday, October 17, 2025, at the Five Cowries Terminal, Falomo, and will feature keynote speeches, a virtual project presentation, and the official unveiling by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The Omi Eko Project is designed to drastically cut commute times, enhance efficiency, and promote environmentally friendly transport solutions across the state’s waterways. This initiative aligns with the Lagos State Climate Action Plan (2020-2025) and aims to reduce traffic congestion and emissions. The project is backed by international partners, including the European Union, French Development Agency, and European Investment Bank, under the Global Gateway Initiative.
The project will deliver a modern, eco-friendly alternative to road transport, boosting economic activity in coastal communities, improving quality of life, and unlocking the full potential of Lagos’s waterways. With a targeted CO₂ emissions cut of 41,000 tons/year, the Omi Eko Project is poised to revolutionize inland water travel across Lagos.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu describes the project as a “legacy initiative” and a “transformational investment” that will redefine urban transport in Lagos. The project will be executed in phases over six years, with the potential to significantly cut carbon emissions, boost economic productivity, and position Lagos as Africa’s model for clean, integrated transport systems
