The Federal High Court in Abuja has halted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention, which was scheduled to hold on November 15-16, pending the determination of a suit filed by former Governor Sule Lamido. Lamido is challenging the party’s decision to proceed with the convention, arguing that it violates the PDP constitution and would deny him the opportunity to contest for the position of national chairman.
Justice Peter Lifu granted the order, restraining the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from monitoring, supervising, or recognizing the outcome of the convention until the case is decided. The court had previously declined to grant an interim order stopping the convention, instead directing the PDP and INEC to show cause why Lamido’s request should not be granted.
The PDP and INEC have filed affidavits opposing Lamido’s application, arguing that the court lacks jurisdiction to entertain the case, which relates to the internal affairs of the party. The court is expected to hear the substantive suit on November 11.
Lamido’s lawyer, Jeph Njikonye, argued that proceeding with the convention would violate the PDP constitution and deny his client the opportunity to contest for the national chairman position. The PDP’s lawyer, Omokayode Dada, countered that Lamido had missed the deadline for obtaining nomination forms and that the party had followed its approved timetable and guidelines.
The case has sparked controversy, with some PDP members petitioning the National Judicial Council (NJC) over alleged judicial misconduct. The plaintiffs in the Abuja Federal High Court suit have called for an investigation into Justice A.L. Akintola’s actions, alleging abuse of judicial process.
The court’s decision to halt the convention has raised questions about the PDP’s internal dynamics and the role of the judiciary in party affairs. As the case unfolds, stakeholders are watching closely to see how it will impact the party’s future and the broader Nigerian political landscape.
