Orji-Uzor-Kalu

There’s been a bit of drama in the Nigerian Senate! Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has confirmed that there was an attempt to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio, but it was foiled thanks to the intervention of some lawmakers. Kalu described it as a “family misunderstanding” and emphasized that the Senate is one big family, implying that such attempts won’t succeed.
According to Kalu, the plot was thwarted because some senators rallied around Akpabio, ensuring the impeachment bid didn’t gain traction. He stressed that the Senate is focused on making laws that’ll help President Bola Tinubu address economic challenges and improve the lives of Nigerians.
Kalu didn’t give many details about the reasons behind the impeachment attempt or the senators involved. However, he emphasized that Akpabio is a capable leader and the right person to lead the Senate at this time. He also praised Akpabio’s leadership, saying he’s doing a great job.
The Senate President has been facing criticism from some senators over issues like the allocation of committee chairmanships and the handling of certain legislative business. However, Kalu’s statement suggests that Akpabio still has the support of the majority of senators.
It’s worth noting that Akpabio is a key ally of President Tinubu, and some have speculated that the impeachment attempt might be linked to internal power struggles within the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, Kalu dismissed such claims, saying the Senate is united and committed to its constitutional duties.
The drama highlights the intense politics within Nigeria’s legislative arm, but for now, Akpabio seems to be holding his ground as Senate President.
