The Civil Society Organization (CSO) Coalition has commended President Bola Tinubu for nominating prominent figures, including Senator Jimoh Ibrahim and former INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, as ambassadors. This move is seen as a strategic decision to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic relations and promote national development.
The coalition praised Tinubu for recognizing the expertise and contributions of these individuals, who bring valuable experience and skills to the table. Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, a respected scholar of Modern War Studies and Security, is expected to leverage his knowledge to enhance Nigeria’s global standing. Similarly, Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure as INEC Chairman has equipped him with the necessary expertise to promote democratic values and strengthen Nigeria’s electoral process.
The nominations have been welcomed by various stakeholders, including the Ikale Advancement Forum, which expressed appreciation for Tinubu’s commitment to deploying Nigeria’s finest minds to key diplomatic positions. This sentiment is echoed by many Nigerians who believe that these appointments will boost the country’s international relations and promote economic growth.
However, some critics have raised concerns about the nomination of Ayodele Oke, a former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, citing unresolved corruption allegations. The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has urged the Senate to reject Oke’s nomination, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in public appointments.
Despite these concerns, many believe that Tinubu’s nominations demonstrate his commitment to meritocracy and good governance. The nominees are expected to be posted to countries with which Nigeria maintains strategic bilateral relations, including China, India, South Korea, and the United States.
