Google has made a significant commitment to Nigeria’s digital future, pledging N3 billion ($2.1 million) to advance AI talent and digital safety in the country. This initiative, announced by Olumide Balogun, Google’s Director for West Africa, aims to support Nigeria’s National AI Strategy and create one million digital jobs. The funding will be channeled through five expert organizations, focusing on AI upskilling, innovation support, and cybersecurit.
The initiative has two main pillars: building advanced AI talent and strengthening digital safety. FATE Foundation, in collaboration with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), will embed an advanced AI curriculum into universities, targeting lecturers and students. The African Technology Forum (ATF) will launch an innovation challenge to guide developers from learning to building real-world products. This will help address the urgent need for deep AI competencies in Africa, empowering tertiary institutions and students in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa.
On the digital safety front, Junior Achievement (JA) Africa will scale the ‘Be Internet Awesome’ curriculum for youth, while the CyberSafe Foundation will strengthen the cybersecurity of public institutions. This dual focus ensures Nigeria has both the skilled workforce and the secure environment needed for sustainable economic growth.
According to research by Public First, Nigeria is poised to unlock $15 billion in economic value from AI by 2030. This investment is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s digital economy, creating opportunities for Nigerians to thrive in the global digital landscape. Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, Honourable Minister of Communication, Innovation & Digital Economy, welcomed the investment, emphasizing its importance in driving Nigeria’s digital transformation.
Google’s commitment builds on its previous investments in Nigeria, including the Equiano subsea cable and the 2023 “Skills Sprint” program, which trained over 20,000 participants, including 5,217 women in AI and tech. The new initiative reinforces Nigeria’s digital agenda, equipping young people and institutions with the tools and skills to harness AI safely and effectively, while advancing inclusive economic growth and innovation.
Overall, Google’s N3 billion commitment is a significant step towards advancing Nigeria’s AI talent and digital safety, positioning the country as a leader in AI innovation on the continent.
