Boris Johnson, former UK Prime Minister, recently visited Nigeria and dismissed security concerns, saying he feels “perfectly safe” in the country. He made this statement at the Imo State Economic Summit 2025 in Owerri, where he was the keynote speaker. Johnson acknowledged that he had read reports about potential security problems in Nigeria before his visit, but he chose to proceed with his trip anyway.
The former UK leader’s comments come amidst rising security concerns in Nigeria, including mass abductions, banditry, and communal attacks. In November, gunmen kidnapped over 300 students and teachers in Niger State, drawing international attention to the country’s security situation. Johnson’s visit and statement have sparked debate, with some viewing it as a show of confidence in Nigeria’s security efforts.
Johnson praised Governor Hope Uzodimma’s efforts to provide 24-hour electricity in Imo State, describing it as a key driver of economic transformation. He also highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in achieving sustainable energy goals, calling AI “the future.
The UK government, however, has issued travel advisories warning against non-essential travel to Nigeria due to security concerns, including terrorism, crime, and kidnapping. The advisory excludes cities like Calabar and Lagos, where travelers are advised to exercise caution .
Johnson’s statement has been seen as a vote of confidence in Nigeria’s economic potential and security measures. He emphasized the strong historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and the UK, highlighting the exchange of skilled professionals and resources between the two countries.
The Imo State Economic Summit 2025, where Johnson made his remarks, attracted prominent figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and businessman Aliko Dangote. The event aimed to foster investment and innovation in Nigeria’s economic development.
