The Federal Government of Nigeria is committed to speeding up the prosecution of kidnappers, bandits, and terror suspects to curb insecurity. Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plans to appoint additional judges to the Federal High Court to strengthen counter-terrorism efforts and ensure efficient case handling.
The government prioritizes prosecution over detention or military engagement, focusing on suspects involved in mass attacks, kidnapping-for-ransom, terror financing, and extremist recruitment. The judiciary plays a critical role in reinforcing national security through timely and fair adjudication.
To accelerate trials, the Court of Appeal has introduced special sittings and Fast Track Practice Directions, particularly for terrorism, human trafficking, and kidnapping cases. The government also seeks to improve judicial capacity and reduce case backlogs.
The push for faster prosecution comes as Nigeria faces worsening insecurity, with terrorist groups and bandits carrying out attacks and kidnappings across the country. The government aims to restore public confidence in the justice system and demonstrate that terror-related crimes will face decisive legal action.
