Victor Osimhen has been crowned Sportsman of the Year at the 2025 GQ Türkiye Men of the Year Awards, a testament to his incredible impact on Turkish football. The Nigerian striker received the prestigious award at an elaborate ceremony in Istanbul, recognizing his outstanding performances for Galatasaray last season
Osimhen’s award is well-deserved, considering his remarkable stats. He scored 37 goals and provided seven assists in 41 matches, leading Galatasaray to a domestic double, including the Super Lig title and Turkish Cup triumph. His impressive form has continued this season, with 11 goals in 14 appearances, helping Galatasaray maintain their position at the top of the Super Lig table.
The 26-year-old striker’s rise to fame has been nothing short of spectacular. He joined Galatasaray on loan from Napoli in 2024 and quickly became a driving force behind the club’s domestic dominance. His performances earned him a permanent transfer to Galatasaray, breaking the Turkish transfer record with a €75 million deal.
Osimhen’s achievements extend beyond Turkey. He was named African Footballer of the Year in 2023, becoming the first Nigerian to receive this honor since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999. He also finished eighth in the Ballon d’Or rankings that same year, cementing his status as one of the world’s best strikers.
In his acceptance speech, Osimhen expressed gratitude to GQ Türkiye, Galatasaray, and his supporters. “I want to say a big thank you to GQ. Can’t forget my Galatasaray family. This means so much to me and my family. I appreciate everyone who has supported me up to this hour,” he said.
Osimhen’s win marks a historic moment for Nigerian football, making him the first Nigerian to receive the GQ Türkiye Sportsman of the Year award. His success serves as inspiration to aspiring footballers in Nigeria and beyond, solidifying his position as one of the world’s top strikers.
