The Bayelsa State government officially confirmed the death of Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo on Thursday, 11 December 2025, after he collapsed in his office and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, where he was pronounced dead. He was 60 years old and had been serving as deputy governor since 2020, also having previously held roles as a senator and state commissioner.
Governor Douye Diri announced a three‑day state mourning period beginning Friday, 12 December, with all flags to fly at half‑mast as a mark of respect. The mourning will include a series of tributes, memorial services, and a burial ceremony that will be coordinated by the state government in accordance with the family’s wishes.
Ewhrudjakpo was known for his low‑key but diligent approach to public service. Colleagues described him as a principled leader who was deeply committed to the development of Bayelsa, particularly in the areas of education and infrastructure. His sudden passing has left a palpable sense of loss across the political spectrum.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and several other political figures have extended their condolences, praising Ewhrudjakpo’s contributions to the party and the nation. The Nigerian Bar Association also issued a statement, highlighting his integrity and dedication as a public servant and legal practitioner.
In response to the tragedy, the state government has set up a committee to oversee the mourning arrangements and to ensure that all necessary support is provided to the bereaved family. The committee will work closely with the deputy governor’s office and the family to plan the funeral and related events.
As Bayelsa observes the three days of mourning, citizens have been urged to remain united and to continue praying for the repose of Ewhrudjakpo’s soul. The governor’s call for calm and solidarity reflects the broader sentiment of a state coming together in a time of grief.
