Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, has passed away at the age of 71. He reportedly died at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication to the Nigerian judiciary.
Born on December 31, 1953, in Doguwa-Giade, Bauchi State, Muhammad had a distinguished career in law, serving as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria from 2006 to 2022 and as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 2019 until his resignation in June 2022 due to health issues.
Muhammad’s academic background is impressive, having obtained his LL.B. degree in Islamic Law from Ahmadu Bello University in 1980, followed by an LL.M. and Ph.D. in Law from the same university in 1985 and 1998, respectively.
Throughout his career, Muhammad was known for his integrity, humility, and unwavering commitment to justice. He was a mentor to many young Muslim law students and played a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s legal landscape.
The Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS) described Muhammad as “a towering figure of integrity, humility, and unwavering commitment to justice,” adding that his passing is a monumental loss to the Nigerian judiciary, the legal profession, and the nation at large.
Muhammad’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of legal practitioners, and his contributions to Nigeria’s judiciary will be remembered for years to come.
