The Ogun State Police Command has arrested eight suspects allegedly involved with the Democratic Republic of the Yoruba group for breach of public peace, unlawful assembly, obstruction of traffic, and assault on police officers. The incident occurred on Christmas Day at Temidire Junction and Under-Bridge area of Sango-Ota, where members of the group blocked roads, set bonfires, and disrupted traffic.
The police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the arrests, stating that the suspects were apprehended after police operatives mobilized to the location and dispersed the group. The arrested individuals include Adewale Sosanya, Opeyemi Oladotun, Zara Gabriel, Ajoke Gabriel, Adewale Adebomojo, Yusuf Tanimowo, Olurotimi Ademola, and Toyin Gabriel.
Several items were recovered from the suspects, including a Toyota Dyna vehicle, broadcast speakers, flags, shirts with inscriptions, and banners displaying their messages. The police are investigating the incident, and the suspects will be arraigned in court.
This isn’t an isolated incident; there have been previous clashes between Yoruba separatist groups and security operatives. In April 2024, a group attempted to capture government buildings in Ibadan, leading to arrests and a shootout with police.
The Ogun State Police Command has reassured residents of their commitment to maintaining peace and security, warning that attacks on law enforcement officers won’t be tolerated. The public is urged to report suspicious activities to the police.
The Yoruba Nation agitation has been ongoing, with some leaders like Sunday Igboho distancing themselves from violent incidents.
