The $2.8 billion Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline is a major energy project in Nigeria, aimed at boosting industrial growth and energy security. The 614km pipeline will transport natural gas from Ajaokuta in Kogi State to Kano, passing through Abuja and Kaduna, and is expected to supply 2.2 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day to power plants and industries.
The project is currently 86% complete, with mechanical completion targeted for November 2025 and full operational commissioning expected in early 2026. The pipeline will enhance energy access, stimulate economic growth, and create thousands of jobs in northern Nigeria.
The AKK pipeline is part of Nigeria’s Gas Master Plan, aiming to establish a robust gas transmission backbone across the country. It will also contribute to reducing gas flaring and promoting environmental protection.
The project has faced several challenges, including security threats, difficult terrain, and funding issues. However, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has assured that the project is on track, with additional subcontractors deployed to expedite completion.
The AKK pipeline is expected to have significant economic benefits, including increased power generation, industrial growth, and regional integration. It will also support Nigeria’s Decade of Gas initiative, promoting gas-based industries and reducing reliance on oil .
The project is being implemented via a build-and-transfer public-private partnership model, with funding from Chinese lenders and NNPC. Once completed, the AKK pipeline will be a major milestone in Nigeria’s energy sector, enhancing energy security and driving economic growth.
