Traders at Arena Market in Oshodi, Lagos, were thrown into panic on Tuesday evening as a fire broke out, engulfing several sections of the market. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident, stating that rescue teams were on site to extinguish the flames.
The fire reportedly started around 6 pm and spread rapidly, consuming stalls stocked with clothing, electronics, and other goods. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with traders scrambling to salvage their wares as thick smoke billowed across the market.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded promptly, deploying firefighters to the scene. According to the service’s controller general, Margaret Adeseye, the fire was confined to a section of the market, affecting about 10 shops used for storing clothing materials. No casualties have been reported .
This incident is the second major fire outbreak in Lagos within a week, following a blaze at the Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, which led to the demolition of the 25-storey building. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed sympathy for the affected traders, promising government support.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with preliminary reports suggesting possible electrical faults or an unattended heat source. Traders are left counting their losses, with some estimating damages in millions of naira.
The frequent market fires in Lagos have raised concerns about safety protocols and enforcement of regulations. The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called for independent investigations into such incidents, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability.
