The PDP has been hit by a wave of defections, with several governors leaving for the ruling APC, citing marginalization and internal instability. Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri recently defected, joining others like Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno who made similar moves earlier in 2025 .
The defections have weakened the PDP, reducing its governors to eight. The party’s internal crisis and leadership disputes are blamed for the exodus. APC chieftains attribute the defections to the PDP’s “impunity and disregard for internal democracy”
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, attributed the defections to the APC’s alleged marginalization of opposition states and politicians. He claimed the ruling party uses federal might to coerce politicians into joining its ranks.
The defections have sparked concerns about the PDP’s viability ahead of future elections. Analysts suggest the party needs urgent reforms to stem the tide of departures. The PDP’s leadership is under pressure to address internal conflicts and revive the party’s fortunes .
The APC has welcomed the defecting governors, with party officials claiming the move reflects confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s leadership. The ruling party now controls more governorships, strengthening its grip on power.
