President Bola Tinubu has appointed Rotimi Oyedepo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Federal Ministry of Justice. Oyedepo’s appointment was approved by the Federal Civil Service Commission and is effective immediately, filling the vacancy left by Abubakar Babadoko, who retires on December 31, 2025 .
Oyedepo, a 2007 law graduate of the University of Ilorin, brings over 15 years of experience in prosecuting complex economic and financial crimes to his new role. He previously served at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he headed the Monitoring Unit and was part of the legal team that handled the landmark Process and Industrial Development (P&ID) case against Nigeria.
As DPP, Oyedepo is expected to reduce the Federal Government’s reliance on external counsel for critical prosecutions and ensure greater coherence and consistency in legal strategies. His expertise will be crucial in strengthening the justice system and enhancing prosecution effectiveness.
Oyedepo’s appointment underscores President Tinubu’s commitment to reinforcing key justice sector institutions. His experience and achievements, including being named EFCC Outstanding Staff of the Year in 2014 and Best Financial Crimes Prosecutor in 2019, make him a strong candidate for the role.
The DPP plays a vital role in advising law enforcement agencies and conducting prosecutions on behalf of the Federal Government. Oyedepo’s leadership will be instrumental in shaping Nigeria’s prosecution framework
This appointment comes as Nigeria continues to grapple with corruption and economic crimes, making Oyedepo’s expertise and experience crucial in the fight against these vices.
